Cat Vomiting .... Maybe It's Not the Food

11/2/2012

I took this excerpt from another blog because our 10 year old cat has been vomiting and loosing weight.  We’ve taken him to the Vet, had the blood tests done and everything comes back within the normal range.

We’ve change all the food multiple times because the cat vomiting hasn’t stopped, it has slowed down with a restricted diet of roasted turkey, dark meat only.  If we feed him anything else, it comes up.

After much inquiry on the web, I must tip my hat to the www.catchannel.com
Here’s an excerpt of the article, while all the test seem to come up ‘non conclusive’, we continue to monitor all intake and output…our next test will be for the IBS, Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome.  If any of you have any other tests that don’t cost an arm and a leg, please let me know…

In general, cats will vomit either from a metabolic disorder or from a gastrointestinal disorder. Your veterinarian should run blood work to rule out such metabolic disorders as kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. If a metabolic disorder is not the cause, then your vet should consider a gastrointestinal disorder, such as a food allergy, food hypersensitivity, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Discuss with your veterinarian trying different diets, for example, prescription diets that are designed to be bland and not irritating to the gastrointestinal system (such as Hill’s Prescription Diet I/D, or Eukanuba Low-Residue formula). If this doesn’t alleviate the problem, a feeding trial using a hypoallergenic diet with a novel protein source such as rabbit, venison, or duck, may be warranted to rule out food allergy.

If the vomiting persists, further diagnostics such as ultrasound and/or endoscopy may be necessary to get to the bottom of your cat’s problem.
